Decay does not hurt until it is well established. By the time a tooth aches, a small filling has often become a root canal. A routine inspection every six months catches cavities at the stage where treatment takes twenty minutes.

What the treatment involves

We examine every surface of every tooth, including the contact points between teeth where decay usually starts and where you cannot see it yourself. X-rays show what is happening under existing fillings and between the back teeth. We also check your existing fillings and crowns for leaking edges, and screen the soft tissues of your mouth.

Step by step

1. We ask about any sensitivity or discomfort you have noticed.
2. Each tooth surface is examined under good light.
3. X-rays are taken where decay could be hidden.

5. Small cavities can usually be filled in the same visit.

Aftercare

If you had a filling, the numbness takes two to three hours to wear off — avoid chewing on that side until it does, so you do not bite your cheek. Mild cold sensitivity for a few days is normal. If the filling feels high when you bite together, come back and we will adjust it; it takes a minute and it saves you weeks of discomfort.
