An implant is a titanium root placed into the jawbone, with a crown fixed on top. Unlike a bridge, it does not rely on the teeth beside it, and unlike a denture it does not move. It is the closest thing to getting your own tooth back.

What the treatment involves

We first check that there is enough healthy bone to hold the implant, using a scan. The implant is then placed under local anaesthetic in a procedure most patients find easier than they expected. Over the next few months the bone grows onto the titanium and locks it in place. Once it is stable, we take an impression and fit the final crown.

Step by step

1. Assessment and scan to plan exactly where the implant goes.
2. The implant is placed and the gum is closed over it.
3. Three to six months while the bone fuses to the implant.
4. An impression is taken for your permanent crown.
5. The crown is fitted and your bite is adjusted.

Aftercare

Expect some swelling and discomfort for two to three days after placement; ice and the painkillers we prescribe are usually enough. Stick to soft food and avoid chewing on that side for the first week. Do not smoke during healing, as it is the single biggest cause of implant failure. Once the crown is fitted, clean it like a natural tooth and keep your six-month checks.
